Technology at Meadowridge
Nowadays, discussions about technology revolve around what its capable of doing, not what students are capable of doing with the technology. Many of the claims seem to ignore the question: is it the best way? Paper, pen, and pencil can be just as good – if not better – and seem to be forgotten in the world of catchphrases, trends, and brand names.
How do our students & faculty employ technology?
At Meadowridge, we teach our students to acquire, use, and share information in multiple forms and ways so that it becomes meaningful knowledge. When it comes to technology, every decision we make is based on learning, and that’s because technology cannot replace outstanding teaching or collaboration with other learners. We make sure that our school and our students control technology, and are not controlled by it.
Experimenting: labs house specialty equipment for students to test over 30 variables and controls: with Vernier probes and sensors, our students can include things like conductivity, current, heart rates, radiation, sound level, and magnetic force into their experiments.
Creativity: theatrical and musical productions come to life with the help of our student-led production team. Lighting, sound, and set design are realized through professional grade acoustics, lighting and sound systems. Students take part in professional development to learn the ins-and-outs of the equipment.
Learning: each classroom is outfitted with a projector, allowing for our faculty to easily employ video and other media in class. Classes are also equipped with Smart Boards and Document Cameras.
Inquiring: our library supports student learning through a growing collection of 40,000 resources, including access to digital library catalogues, subscription databases, and other software applications. It is also equipped with touch-screen computers, laptops and iPads for all types of inquiry learning, both collaborative and individual.
Designing: the design and technology lab is a space where students engage with the complete design cycle – they design, then build, consider improvements, and re-build and re-design as necessary. This inquiry learning is enabled by a bevy of design technology: computers, 3D printers, hand tools, and cameras, to name a few.
All students are provided with: public computers and printers, a wireless network, and presentation equipment.
When it comes to technology, every decision we make is based on learning, and that’s because technology cannot replace outstanding teaching or collaboration with other learners.
