A PEEK INSIDE
Grade 6 Global Economies
and Resources Unit

Grade 6 students in Mr. Kevin Kennedy's class are in the midst of their Global Economies and Resources Unit in Individuals and Societies. Together, the class has looked at things like Canada's role in global trade, the impact of trade on the environment and workers, free trade, and fair trade. As part of their learning, the class takes part in a Global Trade simulation game where students are designated as a country.

It is very difficult for poorer countries to compete, and there are intermittent global economic events—like falling energy prices or drought pushing up coffee prices—to keep the game vibrant.

Each country receives a different amount of cash and resources to trade with other countries which simulates the spectrum of countries in the world, from developing to developed. Students have objectives to meet and points are awarded. It is very difficult for poorer countries to compete, and there are intermittent global economic events—like falling energy prices or drought pushing up coffee prices—to keep the game vibrant. Once the simulation is over, the class debriefs and inquires into how global trade works, its benefits and its challenges.
