A Peek Inside
Grade 6 Sciences:
Acids & Bases

In Science 6, students are exploring the properties of acids, bases, and various indicators. To solidify their understanding of the pH scale, students applied their lab skills to a formative investigation using one of the most colourful (and easily obtainable) indicators: red cabbage juice!

"The students' curiosity about the applications of acids and bases led to in-depth discussions about pH scales in areas of Biology and Earth Sciences."

Students tested the pH of eight clear, unknown solutions by recording their initial qualitative data and compared the colour changes against the standardized pH chart. Using prior research about common household chemicals, students concluded and stated the possible identities of the eight unknowns. This practice also reinforced that unknowns cannot be identified by their physical characteristics, but that there are many other testable (and quantifiable) properties in science!

Curiosity is fostered and encouraged in the Science 6 classroom, and open Q & A sessions are often a result of this practice. The students' curiosity about the applications of acids and bases led to in-depth discussions about pH scales in areas of Biology and Earth Sciences. Deliberations were made about the effects of fluctuating pH levels on the human body, such as the impact of continual exposure to gastric juice on the esophagus and teeth. They also explored how acids can have environmental ramifications, such as ocean acidification, resulting from the burning of fossil fuels and rise of ongoing CO2 emissions. Students are encouraged to make connections and to explore how specific concepts learnt in class may have significance and meaning to their own lives, further promoting inquisitive minds!
