Location: Kowloon, Hong Kong
Where she is now:
IB Global Politics Teacher

There’s a very distinctive culture at Meadowridge that has made me who I am today. Meadowridge prepares people to make positive changes in the world around them and to be good people. The environment at Meadowridge also taught me how to live by the mission statement ‘learning to live well, with others and for others, in a just community.’ This, along with the IB learner profiles, have been instilled in me by my teachers and the cohesive environment at Meadowridge.

Over 10,000 kilometers away in Hong Kong, the Meadowridge teachings can be heard and observed in ’17 alum Charleen Lui’s classroom. Charleen works as an IB Global Politics Teacher at Delia Memorial School (Glee Path campus) where she says she passes down the lessons she learned during her time at Meadowridge to her students.

“Meadowridge teachers have inspired me with their educational approaches, and I’ve been trying to apply those methods in my classes. The teachers really care about the well-being of each student, which is something I prioritize in my classroom. I really have to thank my Meadowridge teachers for indirectly teaching me how to teach!” says Charleen.

When Charleen was a student, her participation in Model UN sparked her interest in politics and history. Keen on reconnecting with her cultural roots in Hong Kong and in learning more about politics, she pursued a Dual Degree in Government and Laws at the University of Hong Kong after graduating from Meadowridge in 2017. Armed with her knowledge of politics and love for the IB teachings, it only made sense for Charleen to become a Global Politics Teacher.

“Seeing students become really engaged in a particular topic in class and getting to know their hobbies and future aspirations is the most enjoyable part of my job. It brings me great joy to see when my students are intrigued about what I’m teaching. It never gets boring!”

Charleen’s favourite thing about teaching is watching her students thrive in the IB environment, just as she did while she was at Meadowridge.
