More Than an Education: A Family’s Journey of Growth & Gratitude

When Yang and Ivy first toured Meadowridge School, their son was just four years old and knee-high — a small detail that the parents remember especially well. “Everyone we came across knelt down and spoke to him directly,” Ivy smiles. The school had everything they expected, but it was what they didn’t expect—the welcoming feel, the kindness—that led them to enroll.

Thirteen years later, that same sense of community has remained strong while their son, Joshua, has grown into a capable, confident young adult.

Since joining the school, Yang and Ivy have been in awe of their son’s evolution and the education and support he has received. Like in Kindergarten, when a teacher noticed and encouraged his advanced reading abilities. Or in Grade 1, when he researched and wrote a book on Cinco de Mayo, something the parents still have and cherish to this day. “We were amazed at what he was accomplishing at such a young age,” Ivy reflects.

As Joshua grew, so too did the support he received and the knowledge he gained. In high school, he discovered and delved into STEM and immersed himself in clubs like robotics and fencing, as well as contests for physics and math.

"Our gift reflects everything Joshua has gained here—we gave because of the person he has become."

Joshua says personalized learning and teachers’ support have shaped him the most. Beginning with his Grade 5 Exhibition, an inquiry into air pollution, and continuing with his Diploma Programme (DP) physics classes and Independent Assessments (IAs), Joshua has grown into an independent and intelligent learner.

While Joshua has flourished, Yang and Ivy’s gratitude for the school has only deepened.

Now in Grade 12 and about to graduate, the family has had time to reflect—not just on how the school has shaped Joshua but on the impact giving has made. “Over the years, we’ve seen the growth in the campus and resources,” Ivy says. “We know that’s because of parents’ contributions, something our family has gained so much from.”

Inspired by the difference Meadowridge has made in their son’s life, they donated their full MEID back to the school as a gesture of thanks. “Our gift reflects everything Joshua has gained here—we gave because of the person he has become,” Ivy smiles.

With their $10,000 donation, the Liu family hopes to support Meadowridge's continued growth and ensure future students have access to the same transformative experiences Joshua did. From robotics equipment to lab resources, they want to help enrich the campus's “life” and the education that has meant so much to their family.
