A team of Grade 10 students, Ian C., Hasaan S., and Eric W., achieved an outstanding result on the global stage, placing 4th overall in the AI Video Track for their video piece, The Unknown World at the World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY), out of more than 125,000 participants.
Competing against students from around the world, the Meadowridge team was challenged to imagine and illustrate places humans have never set foot in. Their project explored the competition’s Worlds Unseen theme with concepts around dreamscapes, alternate dimensions, alien civilizations, and microscopic universes, blending science, fantasy, and art with AI tools to create compelling visual storytelling.
This achievement is closely connected to the students’ learning in AI: Inquiry, Impact and Ethics, a B.C. Ministry–approved elective course for Grades 9 and 10, created and taught by Ms. Briana Bolt. In this course, students explore the evolving world of AI through inquiry, examination of its real-world applications, and discussions around the ethical challenges of AI. Students also get an opportunity to participate in competitions, debates, hands-on experiments, and case studies that help them develop an understanding of Al on individuals, society, and the future. This allows them to make their own informed perspectives on the promises and pitfalls of Al technologies. As part of their learning, students examined the intersection of arts and AI, along with the role of descriptive writing to produce more intentional and ethical AI-generated imagery. They also explored the importance of privacy policies and data awareness when using generative AI tools.
This accomplishment highlights our students’ innovation and Meadowridge’s broader vision and approach to creativity, ethical engagement with artificial intelligence, and future-focused learning. We are proud of our students for representing the Meadowridge community on a global platform and look forward to seeing how they continue to push the boundaries of innovation!
