The May 2021 IB results were released this week and we want to share with the community the achievements of the Class of 2021.
This represents their journeys and the incredible support they received from their parents and our staff throughout the PYP, MYP, and DP programmes. Eleven of our graduates are lifers, who have been with us for up to 14 years. While others joined us later, including three in Grade 11 creating our largest cohort ever at 49 students, the Class of 2021 has been unforgettable!
We are so proud of what they have accomplished and how they have reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also how they defined themselves over previous years, and during their time as leaders of our school. Although this year may not have been what the Grade 12s hoped for in a graduation year, this was a unique year, where each school faced different levels of additional challenge. They are a cohort who lived our mission statement to “live well with others, and for others, in a just community” and that, rather than their academic achievements, is why we are so proud of them.
As in the past, our graduates are exemplary. They inspire us. For our school staff, the gift of having time with these outstanding young people has been priceless, and we are all the more grateful for it in light of the pandemic. We thank them and their parents for sharing their time with us.
Academic Achievements
Our 15 IB Course students achieved results that showcase their strong academic abilities with an 88.4% average. We also had 34 students complete the full IB Diploma this year, which represents a 100% success rate, with an average total score of 38.5 points and two students achieving a perfect score of 45. What incredible academic achievements by all our graduates! These results continue our annual trend of scoring well above the IB world average (which started with our first cohort in 2014).
In addition, we encouraged our students to earn their official qualification from the French or Spanish governments by writing the Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) or the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) tests. We also had one student complete the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and three students completed the IB Chinese A Literature SL course, two of whom earned a bilingual IB diploma.
Additionally, we had several students complete Pamoja courses which required them to take ownership of their learning with specific supports from within our school. We also had two students complete the Diploma with academic accommodations. Their ability to persevere and complete such a rigorous program speaks to the extensive support from teachers and administration that all our graduates receive.

Due to COVID-19, every IB curriculum was modified in some way. Our 2021 graduates and their teachers were nimble and flexible in implementing these adaptations and showed grace, patience, and flexibility in dealing with the unknown.
Further to this, some university-level independent research Extended Essays they completed included:
- To what extent does ‘Lemonade’ subvert hip-hop culture to interrogate traditional gender roles?
- How does modern society play a role in what is expressed in the Indigenous Arts of Canada?
- How does the 1-hour phase advance associated with daylight saving time affect self-reported sleep duration (minutes) and biological chronotype - as estimated by midsleep values - in a sample of adolescents aged 16-18?
- To what extent did the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics improve the socio-economic development of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver?
- To what extent does pH affect the rate of evaporation of chlorine in pool water as simulated by sodium hypochlorite?
Well-roundedness
When we look at the impact these students have made in our community, highlights include their exceptional musical contributions both outside and inside of our school, high-caliber athletes, fine artists, and their amazing interest in STEM subjects captured in their incredible involvement in robotics. You are probably also aware that this year’s graduates were very involved in social justice-themed issues and action. A few examples of this are their outstanding CAS activities and projects:

Constructing and distributing care packages to the Vancouver homeless population as a part of the "Vancouver Care Package Project".

Organizing a virtual one-day Model UN conference in September 2020 called ReModel UN

Organizing a First Lego League robotics tournament event at Meadowridge School

Leading a Chinese Calligraphy Club

Leading a Mandarin Club

Facilitating the process of adopting animals from an overseas non-profit organization (the World Animal Network)

Raising money for the BC SPCA.
All high school students at Meadowridge are supported as they strive to attain the Duke of Edinburgh Award. This graduating class has 4 Gold, 27 Silver, and 35 Bronze recipients of this prestigious award.
Congratulations to the Meadowridge Class of 2021. They will be remembered for their thoughtfulness, supportiveness, humility, gratefulness, compassion, and kindness. The graduation legacy gift of a living plant wall will allow us to remember their ecological drive and determination to better our world. We will miss them and hope they will return soon to share their exciting journeys with us soon.
