Grade 6 Students Build Elk-Skin Drums for CWOW

During CWOW on Tuesday, February 28, Grade 6 students learned from an Indigenous Elder from the Sts'alis Nation.

Students built traditional elk-skin drums, using renewable/natural, traditional, and sustainable resources (sinew lacing and a cedar frame). This activity links directly to our current unit in Societies and Literature where we are looking at the following statement of inquiry: "Individuals and communities are connected through global interactions, though balancing trade with the protection of human rights and the sustainability of natural resources poses a significant challenge."

It was a wonderful opportunity, for which all who were involved felt grateful to have received the teachings that accompanied the activity, along with overcoming some of the challenges - and the collaborative rewards - of the drum-making experience.
