The Future Voters

Grade 5 students recently participated in the Student Vote Canada program, which ran across Meadowridge's elementary, middle, and high schools. This initiative provided students with hands-on electoral process experience and emphasized the importance of civic engagement for their future.

Students gained a deeper understanding of Canada’s political party structure through classroom resources provided by Student Vote Canada. As part of their IB Unit of Inquiry, they were also immersed in scenarios that challenged their knowledge of barriers to voting, including the historical challenges faced by those with accessibility challenges or who identify as women, BIPOC, or Indigenous. They explored the history of voting rights in Canada, learning how these groups overcame obstacles to participate in the democratic process.

A particular highlight was a recent visit from Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy, who answered students’ questions on elections, taxes, and local issues. The students were highly engaged and interested in how these topics will impact their future.

Reflecting on the experience, student Emily Y. shared, "It changed me by making me know who I want to vote for when I grow up!"

This enriching experience has inspired our students to think critically about how their future societal role can shape the future.
