Special Awards Supplement: The District/Authority Scholarships
The District/Authority Scholarships are awarded by the Ministry of Education as part of the Provincial Scholarship Program. This scholarship provides an opportunity for students to be recognized for developing an area of interest to the level of excellence, both within school and the wider community. Concentrations include languages, athletics, visual arts, service, music, leadership, information technology, and more. We are pleased to announce that seven recipients have been chosen from Meadowridge School this year.
This adjudication had not awarded this scholarship in time to be included in convocation.
Eric Xue: Computer Programming
Eric was recognized for his excellence in computer programming. He has been developing his skills in programming since Grade 2 and has explored several applications with programming throughout his high school years, including robotics, app development, web development, artificial intelligence, and game development. Some of his key accomplishments include winning 2nd place in the RoboCup Junior Soccer Open League with his teammates, developing an app that can recognize the breed of a dog from a photo, and being a Runner-Up in Google Code-in.
Pawel Pater: Leadership
Pawel was selected for his excellence in leadership. Key contributions while attending Meadowridge included helping organize the SPCA dinner, participating in the Graduation Committee and Social Justice Club, and instructing as a fencing coach. Externally, he has been an active member of Army Cadets and has received the LGen JE Vance Leadership Award during a 6-week Expedition Instructor Cadet training course. He regularly participates in Polish community events and is proud to have received the Bronze, Silver and awaiting Gold levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Tracy Yang: Service
Tracy was selected for her commitment to service. In school, she was a member of the Senior Council, a writer for the school magazine, and a regular volunteer for sports games since Grade 7. Outside of Meadowridge, Tracy worked with a partner to contact FreeGeek, an NGO that recycles and redistributes e-waste to the community and collected e-waste from the Meadowridge community. Additionally, experiences such as working with seniors with dementia and planning & performing in annual Benefit Concerts to support research charities taught Tracy to be observant of others’ needs and realize the importance of service.
Annie Zhang: Service
Annie was selected for her commitment to service. Some of her key community service contributions have been serving on Student Council, where she led the planning of large events like formal dances, Spirit Days (pre-COVID), and fundraisers, co-founding the Social Justice Club to inform youth about and encourage students to talk about important social justice issues such as racism, and volunteering at the Ridge Meadows Hospital with the VolunTEEN program, where she assisted staff with recreational activities and companionship for long-term care and acute care patients.
Jia Yi Zhao: Visual Arts
Gladys was selected for her excellence in visual arts. She has a passion for learning about art in all its forms, but specifically illustration and character design. Her artwork is visually rich with harmonious colour schemes and subtle symbolism. She creates to a strict criterion she constructs for herself. With the aim to clearly present the lively images in her mind into actual works of art, she goes through the process of capturing the mood of her imagination and endowing it with recognizable elements of reality.
Noah Wong: Leadership
Noah was selected for his excellence in leadership. A few of Noah’s key contributions in the field of leadership include serving as Co-President of Meadowridge’s Student Council for two years, volunteering as a fencing coach with the school fencing club and co-founding the Social Justice Club. In addition, outside of CAS, Noah helped organize two of the annual Child Haven International Dinners, which raised over $40,000 to help women and children in South Asia, co-founded and organized TEDxYouth@SeymourSt and staffed multiple Model United Nations conferences.
Riya Li: Leadership
Riya was selected for her excellence in leadership. A few of her key contributions while attending Meadowridge included serving on Student Council and co-founding the Social Justice Club as well as the Chinese Calligraphy Club. Outside of Meadowridge, she built a mental health awareness website that was a semi-finalist for the Global Social Leaders Competition and founded an online literary journal. Riya also hosted Creative Writing workshops and taught Mathematics in her free time.
