Tell us about your time at Meadowridge.

I joined in Grade 9 after some of my middle school classmates had joined. I was looking for more of a challenge at school. I still remember looking up “How to tie a tie” on YouTube on my first day of school! But really, I grew up here. When I first joined, I was still using a translator and was getting my languages mixed up. Not anymore. At Meadowridge, I’ve been able to explore new interests like the Business Case Competition and Robotics and hone my passion for arts.

What’s it like being a student at Meadowridge?

You feel supported, whether by classmates, friends, or teachers. When I joined the school, my classmates contacted me and asked if I needed help. Later, my teachers checked in with me to make sure I was doing well academically and emotionally. Everyone here is here to support you and help you succeed. I developed real friends through many collaborative projects like robotics fundraisers and business competitions. One of my robotics teammates, who joined New York University last year, knew I was applying early decision. The day they released their decisions, she messaged me, How is my future NYU classmate doing? That’s what Meadowridge is like.

What will you always remember from your time here?

Our Tuesday breakfast tradition in Grade 11 art. It was our first class of the day, so Ms. Laurie invited us to bring some breakfast to share, and we sat around, chatted, and caught up. Sometimes, we would talk about art—in class, in life—and other times, we would just catch up. I always brought in Chinese items like sesame balls or steam buns. My other classmates brought cereal, Timbits, granola bars, or bakery items. I will always remember these mornings.

Tell us about an experience that shaped you.

Choosing what to study in university was a significant choice for me. It took me a long time to think about it and decide. Art is my passion—it’s what I want to do. At the same time, I was also encouraged to pursue something more practical where finding a career is easier. Deciding what to study in university involved many conversations and considerations, and these are the moments that shaped me. I do not give up on things very easily, but I learned that sometimes it’s necessary to consider different perspectives.

Choosing a school and program is quite the journey—tell us yours.

I’ve wanted to study in New York since reading The Catcher In the Rye by J. D. Salinger. I wanted to live the life that Holden had. So, after reading the book and thinking of New York, I asked my mom if we could visit. Since that trip, I knew I wanted to apply to New York University. I even attended a seven-day investment camp at the university, to be sure. During that time, I lived on campus, learned about their economics program, and became surer. My decision to major in Economics and minor in Visual Arts is a win-win. Art is my biggest passion in life.

What are you most looking forward to in the year ahead? In the future?

Making new friends while pursuing my academic goals. I’ll be rooming with a girl from my hometown. I’m excited to have someone to talk to and explore with. I’m looking forward to the good restaurants and museums in New York.

What words of wisdom would you pass on to Meadowridge students?

Seek to grow up but cherish these moments. From the moment you enter the Diploma Programme, time goes by quickly. I still can’t believe I’m graduating in 23 days! I feel like we just started. Between assignments and exams, you’ll feel stressed about finishing them and getting them done, but it goes fast. Cherish the days and memories and make the most of them. I would also add that you should ask for help when needed. Help people and remember that people will always help you.
