At Meadowridge School, learning is an adventure that fosters creativity, adaptability, and real-world experiences. During our summer enhancements, the Visual Arts Studio was getting a makeover and finding its new home in the Arts Centre.
When it became temporarily inaccessible at the start of the school year, Grade 12 Art Teacher Ms. Rhonda Laurie saw it as an opportunity. Instead of postponing the lesson, she turned the unexpected challenge into a unique field trip—right in her own backyard.
Ms. Laurie welcomed her Grade 12 art students to her home, where she had arranged for a live model to be part of their outdoor sketching session. Students worked in timed intervals, drawing the model in various poses. This method encouraged the students to create multiple works quickly, pushing their boundaries and honing their observational skills in a dynamic outdoor environment.
With its inspiring natural beauty, the open-air setting added a unique touch to this art class experience. Surrounded by the lush greenery of Ms. Laurie’s backyard, the students embraced the challenge, experimenting with different techniques and perspectives. The session also allowed them to take a fresh look at their work process and produce art in a completely new way, inspired by the beauty of nature.
This field trip marks the start of an exciting year for Meadowridge's senior art students, reminding us all that creativity thrives even when faced with unexpected challenges. This is just one of the many ways our dedicated faculty and staff go above and beyond to enrich the Meadowridge student experience, where learning is an adventure.
