This February, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to China alongside Mr. Scott Banack and Ms. Kathy Leung. Together, we embarked on a meaningful journey to Beijing and Shanghai and even squeezed in a day trip to Nanjing. Our purpose? To connect with Meadowridge families, alumni, and friends living in China—and what a memorable trip it was!
In Beijing and Shanghai, we hosted Meadowridge socials, each attended by parents, grandparents, and alumni. These gatherings allowed us to share exciting school updates, experience the traditions and history of Chinese culture firsthand, and—perhaps most importantly—connect face-to-face over good food, conversation, and laughter.
Beyond the events, we immersed ourselves in the richness of Chinese culture. From the first taste of Peking duck and bubbling hot pot to mouthfuls of fresh seafood and the unforgettable (and very strong!) Moutai toasts, we were treated to the warmth and generosity that define Chinese hospitality.
Our adventures in Beijing took us to the Great Wall of China, the Temple of Heaven, and the vibrant 798 Art District. We also experienced a unique dinner and cultural performance and had the special honour of visiting a foreign language school founded by one of our Meadowridge grandparents.
Shanghai offered equally unforgettable moments. We wandered along the iconic Bund, toured businesses owned by Meadowridge parents, visited international schools, cruised the river under the city lights, and reached new heights at the top of the Shanghai Tower. We also took the high-speed train to Nanjing, where we enjoyed visiting a parent's workplace headquarters, sharing delicious meals, and exploring the Niushoushan Cultural Tourism Zone.
But the greatest highlight of all? The people. The heartfelt connections we made with Meadowridge families were truly the heart of this trip. We felt incredibly fortunate to share photos and stories from home with parents who live and work in China, often apart from their families for much of the year. At the same time, we were grateful for the chance to learn about their lives and experiences abroad. And, of course, all of it was made even better over countless cups of tea (and a few Moutai cheers for good measure!).
We are deeply grateful for the warmth and hospitality we received in China. With such a strong foundation of friendship and shared experience, we’re already looking forward to our next visit—and making this an annual tradition.
干杯
Until next time!
