Investigating art as a way of living, a way of expression, and a means to understand the world, Grade 11 Spanish students had the unique opportunity to interview Sonia Higuera, a graphic designer and contemporary artist from Cantabria, northern Spain.
After working through a couple of documents and realizing how difficult they can be to understand, the class welcomed the expert advise and wisdom from Sonia Higuera. Before the interview, students viewed her more recent installations and prepared questions.
She encouraged students to go further and get to know the work of women artists. Sonia shared that we need to learn to look and see, be critical thinkers, and do some personal research to understand contemporary art.
Then, joined by the artist over Zoom, the class was able to learn more about her thoughts and insight, her creative process, and the active role she plays in understanding or experiencing art. They also asked a ton of questions.
“It was great to hear her perspective and be exposed to her way of understanding!” shares teacher Ms. María Palacios Cerezales. “She encouraged students to go further and get to know the work of women artists. Sonia shared that we need to learn to look and see, be critical thinkers, and do some personal research to understand contemporary art.”
With the interview wrapped up, students will now work on the written wealth of other, available information – in Spanish! “In the meantime,” Ms. Cerezales nods, “let’s keep our eyes wide open!”
