Mr. Abdul Rauf Sulemana: The Newest Member of the Meadowridge Community

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Abdul Rauf Sulemana to the Meadowridge community. Mr. Sulemana will teach Middle School Art, Design and Advisory. Get to know him and be sure to say “hello” if you see him around.

Mr. Sulemana has taught Art for seven years, and throughout that time, his artistic practice has evolved alongside his teaching. He primarily works with acrylic paint and is especially drawn to surrealism, which allows him to explore imagination, emotion, and the spaces between reality and possibility.

“As an artist, I am always seeking moments of aesthetic experience—whether through working with materials and tools, responding to an environment, or engaging with an audience,” Mr. Sulemana reflects.

"In the classroom, I see art as more than producing finished pieces. It’s about helping students slow down, observe, take risks, and build confidence in their own ideas. The art world has changed rapidly in recent years, particularly with the rise of digital tools and AI. I approach new technologies with curiosity rather than fear, treating them as creative tools to experiment with and question. While I’m aware of the challenges AI poses, I believe it can also create meaningful opportunities for students to explore creativity in new and responsible ways."

What Brought Me to Meadowridge:
I was drawn to Meadowridge because its values closely align with those of my former school. The Mission, “Learning to live well, with others and for others, in a just community,” strongly resonates with my experience teaching at Ghana International School, where we focused on “Educating a global citizen.” GIS’s motto is “Understanding of Each Other.” Both communities share a deep commitment to empathy, understanding, and learning beyond the classroom, making Meadowridge a natural fit for me.

Interesting Fact:
I am passionate and curious about analog photography; however, my strength is in digital photography.

Most Important Teaching Lesson Learned:
Education begins with trust: students learn best from those who demonstrate that their interests are held sincerely.

Favourite Book:
Exit West by Mohsin Hamid: I enjoyed how he approached contemporary global crises through a gentle infusion of the magical, creating a space where readers are not merely informed but invited to reflect, question, and interpret.

Favourite Pastime:
I love playing or watching soccer, making art and watching animations.

What I look forward to in the year ahead:
I look forward to collaborating with students and staff to explore creative enquiry, playfully building a culture of experimentation and joy. I am excited to see how our shared ‘what if’ questions transform into vibrant projects.
