Building Community in Grade 1

Grade 1 students have been busy learning about the people and places that strengthen a community. Students explored different jobs and their importance in everyday life through research, writing, parent guest speakers, and a field trip to The World of Kidtropolis.

To bring their learning to life, students transformed their classrooms into a city! Using paper, cardboard, and borrowed toys, they built key locations, including their very own version of a White Spot restaurant and a Save-On-Foods grocery store, along with a hospital, toy shop, fire station, and more. Once their city was complete, they took on different roles, sharing what they had learned through role-playing.

Parents, staff, and other students were invited to visit their community exhibit. There, they could experience businesses and services such as a bakery, a doctor’s office, a dentist’s office, a police station, a school, and more and see firsthand the students' effort and creativity in their work.

“It was so much fun when visitors came to see the city. I liked showing them my job,” shared Reese B.

This hands-on project allowed students to engage deeply with the concept of community while fostering creativity, teamwork, and communication skills.
