A Hands-On Journey Through Persian Mosaic Art in Grade 3

Last week, Grade 3 students were treated to a special art workshop led by Naz K., a Grade 3 parent who generously volunteered her time and talents to share the beauty of Persian mosaic art with the class. Nav prepared a meaningful and engaging presentation, bringing in all the materials needed for students to create their very own mosaics using tiny mirrors and coloured glass pieces.

The workshop was more than just an art lesson; it was a cultural experience. Students learned about traditional Iranian motifs, architectural influences, and the deep artistic heritage of Persian carpets and tilework. Throughout the session, students were eager and respectful listeners, and many began drawing connections to their own cultures and traditions.

“One student noticed how the clouds in Persian art resembled those in Chinese art,” shares Ms. Clement. “Naz responded with a smile and said, ‘Yes, because China and Iran are neighbours.’ These moments of connection are what make these experiences so powerful for our students.”

The idea for the workshop came together quickly. Ms. Clement and Naz had a passing conversation during recess just a couple of weeks earlier. Naz was excited about the opportunity and, within days, had booked a time, prepared her materials, and brought this idea to life in the classroom.

“I wanted to more broadly represent the wonderful variety of artistic styles and cultures within our school community,” Ms. Clement reflects. “But I didn’t know who to ask. Now I realize I need to keep asking—because clearly, I have no idea what magical experiences are waiting for our students.”
