New Guidelines for Student Council Elections
Here's Everything You Need to Know
With the Grade 12s getting ready to start their final IB DP exams, it is time for the Senior Gryphon Council to say 'goodbye' to our former members and welcome in an eager new group. Over the next two weeks, our new Gryphons will be selected onto a council with an entirely new format.
Previously, students were selected to a specific position and would work on projects within their limited portfolio. For example, if someone was the Activities Gryphon, they would organize the school dances but they would not have the opportunity to organize the Autumn Harvest Dinner or the Café Nights. Starting this year, those restrictions are gone. Now, candidates are selected by house (Alouette, Kanaka, Fraser and Whonnock). Once the council is selected, everyone will have the chance to be involved in whichever events they are excited and passionate about.
In addition to our Executive team – the President, Vice-President, Communications Director and Secretary/Treasurer - each house will have one "Head of House" who will be the 'face' of their house- the main representative and the ultimate cheerleader. They will work with four other House Gryphons to plan and organize house events. The whole council will work together to plan lunchtime events, Spirit Days and afterschool activities.
This change is driven, in large part, by the desire to promote house spirit throughout the whole school. We are all Gryphons and take pride in being part of Meadowridge; we should also be proud of our House, our colours and our team. These changes also allow for additional leadership opportunities within council and let all of our Gryphons be involved in whichever activities are of most interest to them. This same format will be used for the Junior Gryphon Council and will allow for our Grade 5 students to be involved in the planning of major events.

On Friday, April 13, the three candidates for President and the one student who chose to serve as our Vice-President will deliver their campaign speeches to students in Grades 8-11. The Junior President and Vice-President candidates will present their speeches to students in Grades 5-7. After the election on Monday, April 16th, Meadowridge staff will select the remaining positions from all the students who submitted an application. This selection is based on school spirit, leadership qualities, and committed participation in various school and council activities. While applicants must be in good academic standing, grades will not play a role in the selection process.
Both our Junior and Senior Gryphon Councils play a large role in our school, and our purpose is always to ensure that students have a range of engaging activities. Selecting a new council from a wealth of qualified candidates is always difficult, but it is inspiring to see so many students excited to participate.
